HTML5 Media Player

by Andrew Royer on August 25, 2010

in Personal,music

I am looking for an HTML5 media player primarily for audio files. It would be ideal if it seamlessly switched based on the source file parameters to audio with an image if it had one or a compact audio player or a video player. Also would be ideal if the media player was compatible with all of the different application mediums. Meaning it would be embeddable into other applications, able to play from mobile mediums like an iPhone, work on the most recent browsers with some backwards compatibility, and able to integrate into other publishing platforms like Tumblr, Wordpress, Posterous, Social Networks, RSS etc. I have not found one yet that can do this but I also just started looking. If anyone knows of an open source preferably HTML5 based… Continue reading

Syndicating Curating and Aggregating News

by Andrew Royer on August 12, 2010

in Personal

That is all I am doing right now hope to clean up the blog later. Playing around with Thesis and FeedWordPress.

I am not much of a writer. There are already enough good writers and more data than anyone can consume.   So I prefer to curate instead of just repeat what everyone else is saying.  I do have strong opinions of things but they can be summed up in short comments without all of the fluff of writing.  Guess that means I am not much of a blogger, for the few times I do feel like writing they can be found here http://blog.andrewroyer.com/category/personal/

Streaming Music

I made this post over on my music tumblr Fresh Replay but it really belongs here.

Rdio just released their streaming music service and I signed up here.  It has a nice interface and integration with social apps but does not have the library of music that I am looking for.  Out of about 12724 songs in my iTunes library Rdio matched 4341 not bad for a start but I think I will just host my entire library myself in the cloud. Waiting for Apple to put the Lala service they bought and shut

Mobile Me Find My iPhone

Stolen iPhone tracked down and recovered

by Andrew Royer on August 6, 2010

in Personal

On the 4th of July I was celebrating at a friends house in San Marino when I misplaced my iPhone after looking for an hour I decided to leave it and just look up where it was on my computer when I got home.  When I got home I logged into Mobile Me and used the Find My iPhone application and found it was still at my buddies place so I remotely locked the iPhone and sent a message saying please give this phone to my buddy or else.

I would have gone back to get it but I had left my bag in Hermosa with my car keys and my car in Westwood and I was at my summer home in San Gabriel.  The next morning I logged… Continue reading

Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3

Spirit Jailbreak Image by Dekuwa via Flickr

First you should backup your phone and contacts.  Here is a good walkthrough of how to jailbreak your iPhone with software version 3.1.3 using Spirit.  It is super simple and quick and is the first untethered jailbreak for the iPhone with the latest firmware.  If you have a previously tethered jailbreak you must restore first.

Disclaimer:  I am not endorsing jailbreaking your iPhone yet until it gets approved or not read the related articles below.

Consoldate All Of Your Contacts

I recently consolidated all of my contacts accumulated from my iPhone, Gmail, Linkedin, Facebook, and Plaxo into a master list in Google Contacts.  I did this following most of the guidelines in this Lifehacker guide (Lifehack is one of my favorite sites).  There are numerous ways to consolidate contacts but this is one of the best and easiest.  Some issues encountered including using the Greasemonkey script to scrape contact information from Facebook due to the stupid notice at the top of the Facebook phonebook page.  Instead of hacking and fixing the script I consolidated contacts with the new Facebook iPhone app that syncs… Continue reading

Migrated From GoDaddy to Media Temple

by Andrew Royer on June 18, 2010

in Personal,music

Successfully migrated my music blog from Go Daddy hosting to Media Temple.  I moved because of the lack of support for the recent Wordpress security hole at Go Daddy.  Luckily I was not affected so I presume except someone did manage to hack into and spam all comments on all my posts.   Also my hosting subscription runs out at the end of the month and I have a grid server on Media Temple that I am barely using.  The migration was quite simple just download all the blog Wordpress files with FTP, changed the wp-config.php file, and did a backup and restore of the Wordpress database.  Plan is to deprecate and move the music blog to a sub domain… Continue reading

Bad Run at PokerStars Tournaments

by Andrew Royer on May 30, 2010

in Personal,Uncategorized

Today I played in the Sunday Million ($1.5 Million Guarantee) tournament on PokerStars as well a number of other qualifiers and guarantees.  My run of bad luck today was just nasty.  I know it is apart of poker to loose occasionally with AK to a lower Ax but statistically I am a 71% favorite with a 4.5% chance to tie.  I lost these showdowns 4 times most of the time in a critical spot for my tournament life.  Then in the $1.5 MM tourny I was playing well and got my AA cracked to 99 there I am an 80% favorite.  I was busted out of a few other tournaments with a higher pair losing to a lower one.  I know it should balance… Continue reading

Google Feed API

by Andrew Royer on May 30, 2010

in Personal

I have been syndicating my reading list from Google reader for some time.  I have always had trouble grabbing just a concise excerpt that captures the first paragraph and has a thumbnail.  Techmeme and Google do this very well.  I have tried all of the excerpt plugins for Wordpress but they do not work well.  I am going to try using Google Feed API to handle my feed syndication instead of the clunky feed wordpress and excerpt editor plugins.  With the new real time update to the Google Feed API I look forward to trying it out.

Today I setup my Apple Airport Express to play music from any computer on my home speakers wirelessly. Super slick setup and was quite simple.

For the ultimate setup you need an existing wireless network to connect to, an Apple Airport Express, Apple iPhone or Touch with the Remote application, and Rogue Amoeba Airfoil.

First get an Apple Aiport Express and plug it into an outlet with no ethernet connection.  Then open Airport Utility that comes with a mac in Utilities.  Then go through the simple setup steps and choose connect to existing Wireless network… Continue reading
